Olympus EVOLT E-520 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.50 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Olympus E-520 is a refreshed version of Olympus's upper-entry-level camera, the E-510. As such it's a slightly bulked-up E-420 with image stabilization, which makes it one of the most feature-packed and customizable cameras available for under £500/$800. It loses some of its sibling's compact chic but offers a bigger, longer-lasting battery and a more familiar grip shape to those people familiar with contemporary DSLRs.

... It's a perfectly good camera with a great feature-set that does many things very well. Unfortunately, there are cameras for the same money that offer better viewfinders, increased dynamic range, better high-ISO performance, more flexible RAW files and, ultimately, sharper images. ..."

Review (Summary): "The E-520, a replacement for last year's E-510 features 10-megapixels, integrated image stabilization, Live View, fast 3.5 fps continuous shooting, and a larger 2.7" LCD.

Dave over at DCResource has reviewed the EVOLT E-520 and thought that the photo quality could have been better due to tendency to overexposing photos. While the camera wasn't perfect Dave found it to be a good value for the money.

Review (Summary): "The Olympus E-520 is an upgrade of the E-510, a 10Mp Digital SLR aimed at enthusiast or the first time SLR user with a larger budget. The E-510 was awarded Best Digital SLR 2007-2008 by EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) and the E-520 has the same easy to use options along with a few improvements over its predecessor and some advanced features borrowed from the pro-spec E3. ...

... Image processing is superb, noise minimal, sharpness is good, exposures are 100% and the IS system is a lifesaver. Overall a very impressive piece of kit worthy of its price...."

Review (Summary): "The new 10 megapixel Olympus E-520 DSLR camera is an evolutionary upgrade to last year's popular E-510 model. It boasts some notable advancements including wireless TTL flash control, Shadow Adjustment Technology, improved image processing, two extra scene modes, Face Detection and more convenient auto-focus options in Live View. ...

... I personally enjoyed using the E-520 very much, and doubt it would disappoint anybody who decides to buy one after careful weighing of its strengths and weaknesses. The Olympus E-520 is a camera that I can recommend to beginners and enthusiasts alike, and I would not be too surprised to see it in the hands of a few pro photographers, either."

Review (Summary): "Flanked by the cheaper and more restricted E-420 on one side and the professional-level E-3 on the other, the E-520 is designed to compete with most entry-level SLRs, like the Nikon D60, Canon Rebel XSi and Sony Alpha 200. It is physically almost identical to its predecessor, the E-510, though beneath the familiar exterior are a number of new functions, such as auto focus for Live View and face detection. It also aims to bridge the gap for point-and-shoot users by incorporating a large number of automatic and preset modes, while still allowing in-depth tweaking for those who desire manual control. ...

... There’s one of the best Live View modes on the market (with auto focus), a good image stabilization system that’s built into the body, comprehensive presets and a high degree of customizability and control. However, the test results for noise levels, white balance and dynamic range were so poor that they dragged down an otherwise good camera. ..."

Review (Summary): "The tenth camera in Olympus' Four Thirds system and the third in the 500 series, is the new E-520, a 10.0-megapixel model and an update to last year's E-510. Featuring the same sensor resolution as the earlier model, the new camera sees a few tweaks to improve the performance and handling. ...

... This isn't a major upgrade by any means and wouldn't warrant a switch from the E-510, but if you're looking for a feature packed midrange DSLR, the E-520 is worth considering. The improvements, particularly the new image stabilization mode and autofocus accuracy of Live Modes show that these important technologies are still being perfected, and the latest versions on the E-520 are pretty much as good as they get at the moment. ..."
